Certain buds and some fully bloomed flowers were taken. They were observed over a period of time to understand the natural changes in growth. The fully grown flowers shriveled while the buds bloomed. This contrasting mood which reflects the ever changing reality of our being is taken as inspiration.
Ahir community believes that their ancestors lived with Lord Krishna thousands of years ago. On their route to Dwarka with Lord Krishna, they settled midway in Tharparkar, Sindh. This community migrated to Kutch around 700 to 800 years ago. This settlement resulted in formation of different groups within the same community: Praanthadiya Ahir, Machhoya Ahir and Boricha Ahir. Women of this community created elaborate embroideries for personal use, their animals and their home. The women of Meghwaad Gurjar community also practiced this craft and are said to be the most technically proficient Ahir embroiderers. The embroidery is passed down from mothers to daughters and its distinct features are bold colors, dense embroidery, ample use of mirrors and an abundance of floral motifs. The stitches used are sankli (chain stitch), bavaria (criss cross stitch), vanno (herringbone stitch), the popatiyo and dana.
While the men do the weaving, the women are responsible for preparing the warp thread. Since the yarns are too battle when bought, it is first starched in a combination of wheat flour and wild onions which is also an insect deterrent. Once the yarns are starched and dried, it is combed and prepped for the loom. The women swiftly moves her wand or ‘kadani’ over a wooden frame called chaukta. She’s preparing the warp thread, putting together a bundle of exactly 1600 threads of 50 meters each that will be used to create a 39inch width shawl. It will take her six hours of work for about two days to finish the job. The weft yarn is then prepared by rolling on to small bobbins from the hanks. It is then laid on the loom, where the long thread tana, intersects with bana, the shorter one, hence weaving here is called ‘tana bana‘. In Kutch, two types of shuttle looms are in use, a pit loom, which is on ground level and a shuttle loom that is slightly more structured.
